Steel cut oats need to be cooked longer, and with more water. I found a crockpot recipe that is awesome for them, after hunting some.
Basically... poor a little water in the crockpot. Put a glass bowl in and put in 1c steel cut oats + 4 cups water into the bowl. The water in the crockpot should come up around the edges. Cook on low overnight, stir in things and enjoy 4 servings of porridge in the morning! AND no mess in the crockpot.
